A Walk Through the Singapore Zoo (Part 1/5)

Singapore Zoo, which was then known locally as the Mandai Zoo, is touted as among the best zoo in the world by Forbes, if not the best. I went to two zoos in my lifetime and they're nice but this one is different. It presents an "open concept" where animals are enclosed in natural settings rather than keeping them behind bars.

Though it costs us 20 bucks of SG$, for me, the price is reasonable. For each admission ticket sold, 20 cents of it is contributed to the Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRSCF) specifically for the purpose of educating and preserving our local biodiversity. It's really worth a penny!

The zoo is just next door to the Night Safari. So after visiting the zoo, you can continue the fun there in the wildlife park for night visit. But we didn't bother to spend the night there cause both of us, our back and legs were breaking!

From Admiralty Place, we took the SMRT to Ang Mo Kio station and transferred to Bus 138 which has a route that ends at the zoo.

It was already drizzling 13:00 when we arrived and we're welcomed by these statues of an elephant family in a swamp and some sculptured wood art. There are also some restaurants at the main entrance serving yummylicious local food.

Guided by the maps provided for us, we stop to interact with various animals.

My sister even managed to take pictures with this squirrel...so cute :)

Ah Meng's friends

Ah Meng was a female orangutan which belonged to an endangered species.  Smuggled from Indonesia and later given a home at the Singapore Zoo.  Due to old age, she passed away last 2008. A cafe named after Ah Meng could be found right there at the zoo entrance.
